US Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, Richard R Verma, arrived in Kathmandu on Friday, marking a significant diplomatic engagement with Nepal following a recent change in the country’s leadership.

Immediately upon arrival, Verma held a series of high-level political meetings, starting with an afternoon session with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli at the Singha Durbar. According to sources close to the talks, their discussions centred on fostering economic development, promoting women’s empowerment, and exploring opportunities for collaboration in the energy sector. The leaders also deliberated on accelerating Nepal’s progress in sustainable development, which has been a key strategic focus for the country in recent years.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Oli reportedly expressed interest in the upcoming US presidential election, hinting at the broader global implications of the outcome.

Verma’s visit, the highest-level diplomatic engagement from the US since Nepal’s government transition, is seen as a strong signal of continued support and cooperation between the two nations. Aside from his talks with the Prime Minister, Verma is expected to meet with leaders of other political parties, senior government officials, and civil society representatives, further expanding diplomatic ties.

A seasoned expert on South Asia, Verma has extensive experience in the region, having previously served as the US Ambassador to India. His current visit is part of a broader regional tour, with India set as the next destination following his meetings in Nepal.

This visit underscores the importance the United States places on its relationship with Nepal, especially in areas of mutual interest such as development, governance, and regional stability.
