The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of an Iraqi police recruiting center at Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s Kurdish province. Earlier, the Internal Security Forces said that three rockets were fired near the airport.
In a separate statement, Kurdish security forces said the attack was carried out using explosives in a drone. So far no casualties have been reported in the incident. According to eyewitnesses, at least six explosions were heard in the area on Saturday.
Erbil’s airport has been attacked several times in the past year. Some of the attacks were carried out using drones. U.S. officials have blamed Iraq’s Shi’ite Muslim group for the attack.
