Kathmandu — US President Donald Trump on Friday claimed via social media platform Truth Social that all military targets on Iran’s Kharg Island had been “completely destroyed.”
In his post, Trump stated, “Moments ago, under my direction, US Central Command carried out one of the most powerful airstrikes in Middle Eastern history, and all military targets on Iran’s crown jewel, Kharg Island, have been completely destroyed.”
He added, “I have decided not to destroy the oil infrastructure on the island. However, if Iran or anyone else attempts to interfere with the free and safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision.”
Responding on Saturday, a spokesperson from Iran’s Al-Anbiya Central Headquarters warned that “even the smallest attack on energy infrastructure or ports will provoke a devastating response.” They further stated that any strike would result in the destruction by fire of all oil and gas infrastructure in the region, including facilities in which the US and its Western allies have stakes.
Kharg Island, located approximately 24 kilometers off the Iranian coast, serves as a terminal for nearly 90% of the country’s oil exports. Analysts say the incident is likely to escalate regional tensions and raise concerns over the security of international maritime routes.
