Janakpurdham. The road constructed at a cost of crores of rupees in Janakpurdham is now crumbling in places. Even if the road starts collapsing, it has increased the risk of accidents and on the other hand, the quality of construction has been questioned.
The source of Janakpur has started collapsing within a few days of the completion of the construction of Janakpur’s urban road with a loan grant from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). There are gaps in the middle of the roads at various intersections. The road was constructed ignoring the voices of the people who were able to use substandard construction materials and work against the standards. Now the road is broken in different places.
An agreement was reached seven years ago between the ADB and the then Janakpur Municipality to construct underground drains and roads in the Janakpur market area and roads for integrated waste management. An agreement was reached to pave 32 km of underground canals and 12.39 km of roads at a cost of Rs 1.59 billion. The work jointly contracted by China’s ZIEC and Kathmandu-based Sharma Construction Company has been contracted by Janakpur-based Raman Construction Company. Locals have blamed the problem on irregularities in road construction.
Engineer of Janakpurdham Sub-metropolis Birendra Yadav said that some roads have been constructed including the urban building office and some problems have arisen in it. However, he said that there were no major problems in the road constructed by Janakpurdham Sub-metropolis and it was natural that there would be problems in some places after the construction. He also clarified that such roads would be repaired immediately.
