Kathmandu. Various studies have shown that China emits more than 90 percent of its energy projects under the Belt Road Initiative (BRI) on five continents. Environmentalists have accused China of building environmentally friendly infrastructure and investing in high-carbon projects outside China.
Studies have shown that China’s role has played a role in exacerbating environmental degradation and hydropower change. He says the BRI project, which is spread across five continents, has had a serious negative impact on the planet.
Coal emissions accounted for 46 percent of the world’s carbon emissions and electricity for 72 percent. It is seen that the projects of BRI have not met the environmental standards. Chinese projects have not complied with environmental guidelines.
Jennifer Turner, director of the China Environment Forum (CEF), a think tank run by the Woodrow Wilson Center, said: “What it is selling in the name of China’s development model is energy efficient.”
Indonesia, Egypt, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Turkey are some of the countries where coal-based power generation plants are being planned under BRI. The SS Power One plant under BRI in Bangladesh is not only affecting local biodiversity but also local livelihoods.
‘The negative effects of climate change are also being exacerbated by increased coal emissions. Southeast Asia has also been affected. There are further threats to biodiversity and endangered species, ”the CEF said in a recent report.
Chinese banks have invested in 60 coal-fired power plants outside China. All of them are emitting about 276 megawatts of carbon dioxide every year. That’s the equivalent of the whole of Spain emitting carbon a year. It has been accused of emphasizing green investment inside China and exporting coal energy outside China.
Environmentalist Yossi Kadan says, “China meets the criteria of the Paris Agreement at home, but outside the country it is investing in coal-based projects in violation of the agreement.” This has added to the challenge of global carbon emissions reduction.
